Duluth, GA — In a significant stride toward revitalizing a storied landmark, the Urban Redevelopment Agency of Gwinnett County has approved the $11.5 million purchase of the 11.5-acre former Sears site at Gwinnett Place Mall. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of October and will bring the county’s total publicly owned land at the site to 87.5 acres—a substantial portion of the nearly 90-acre property.

This move sets the stage for the mall’s transformation into a modern, mixed-use destination featuring walkable, green spaces, housing, retail, vibrant communal areas, and a new transit hub—the Gwinnett Place Transit Center—slated for completion by 2032.

Guided by community-driven frameworks—the Equitable Redevelopment Plan and the Gwinnett Place Mall Site Revitalization Strategy—which gathered feedback from over 2,000 residents, the redevelopment aims to reflect the area’s diversity and local character.

Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson emphasized the momentum’s significance:

“We’re building incredible momentum toward transforming this site into a hub for catalytic change and opportunity for our residents, entrepreneurs and businesses.”

The property will also be developed with CBRE, a leading real estate firm, which will spearhead a nationwide Request for Proposals (RFP) to attract top-tier development partners, expected to launch later this month.
